Getting Started
-
If you're asking, probably yes. Most people wait years before getting their hearing checked. A hearing test is quick, painless, and gives you real answers — even if the result is "your hearing is fine."
-
The most common signs are asking people to repeat themselves often, struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, turning the TV up louder than others prefer, missing parts of phone calls, or feeling like people are mumbling. Tinnitus — ringing or buzzing in the ears — can also be an early sign. If any of these sound familiar, a hearing test is a good first step. It's painless, takes about 30 minutes, and gives you real answers.
-
Your primary care doctor is a good first stop for ear infections or general concerns. An ENT handles structural or medical ear issues. An audiologist focuses on hearing — testing, hearing aids, and long-term hearing care. If you're not sure where to start, your PCP can point you in the right direction.
-
We see adults only at our Rockville, MD office. We do comprehensive hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, reprogramming for hearing aids you already own, and ongoing care and follow-up.
-
No. We start with a hearing test and a conversation. If hearing aids make sense for you, we'll explain why. If they don't, we'll tell you that too.
Hearing Loss & What causes it
-
There are three main types. Sensorineural is the most common — it's caused by damage to the inner ear and is typically permanent. Conductive hearing loss involves a blockage or structural issue (like fluid or earwax) and is often treatable. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both.
-
Age-related hearing loss, called presbycusis, happens gradually as the tiny hair cells in your inner ear wear down over time. It's one of the most common conditions in adults over 60. Noise exposure, certain medications, and genetics can speed up the process.
-
It can't be reversed, but it can be managed very effectively with hearing aids. Most people are surprised by how much of a difference the right fit makes. The sooner you address it, the easier the adjustment.
Insurance & Cost
-
Hearing aids at Yu Audiology start at $3,500 per pair. That price includes the fitting, follow-up appointments, cleanings, and ongoing support — not just the device itself.
-
Usually not in full. Most plans don't cover hearing aids, or offer only partial reimbursement. We're in-network with Aetna, Cigna, CareFirst BCBS, United Healthcare, and Medicare. Hearing tests are typically covered. We can check your benefits before your appointment.
-
You're not just paying for a device. The price covers professional fitting, programming, follow-ups, and adjustments over time. We bundle it all in — no surprise fees down the road.
Hearing Aids & Technology
-
We work with Oticon, Phonak, Signia, Starkey, and Widex — most of the major manufacturers.
-
It depends on your hearing, your lifestyle, and personal preference. There's no single best brand. We'll help you find the right fit.
-
Most modern hearing aids are small, discreet, and rechargeable. We'll show you the options and let you decide what feels right.
-
About 5 years with normal use and maintenance.
-
Sometimes. Hearing aids can reduce how noticeable tinnitus is by bringing in more sound. It's not a cure, and results vary — but for some people it's a meaningful side benefit.
Adjustments & Ongoing Care
-
Possibly. It depends on the brand and whether we have access to the software. If it's compatible, we're happy to help. Reprogramming is $200/hour, billed in 15-minute increments.
-
It's common, especially at first. Your brain needs time to adjust to hearing more sound again. We can fine-tune your settings — but some background noise is normal and expected with hearing aids.
-
We recommend annually or sooner if needed.
Why Yu Audiology
